Intent and preparation
Competing intent
Choose one dominant intention when several are pulling against each other.
The gapTrying to inform, impress, defend, persuade and protect yourself at the same time.
When to use it
Any conversation where you want several things at once and they do not agree.
The steps
- Pick the situation.
- List every outcome you want.
- Identify which of them conflict.
- Rank them.
- Select one primary intention.
- Select one secondary intention, only if it is genuinely necessary.
- Build the communication around the primary one.
- Deliver.
- Check whether a secondary intention took control.
You know it worked when
You communicate with one clear dominant purpose.
What else it works, and why
- Message
- Conflicting objectives produce overloaded, unfocused messages.
- Presence
- Competing motives show up as hesitation, over explaining and defence.
Which drill is yours, in what order and at what dose, is not something a page can tell you. That is what a Discovery Call is for.
