Argumentation
Fact, interpretation, opinion
Keep an opinion from being delivered as though it were an observation.
The shape
- Fact
- Interpretation
- Opinion
Why that order
Labelling which is which makes the reasoning inspectable, so somebody can disagree with the interpretation while accepting the fact.
A worked example
- Fact
- The client did not attend the meeting.
- Interpretation
- That may suggest the meeting was not a priority for them.
- Opinion
- I think we should confirm their priorities before scheduling another.
A framework tells you what shape the answer takes. It cannot tell you whether shape is what you are short of, and for most people it is not. Which one is yours, and whether a framework is the right instrument at all, is what a Discovery Call is for.
