Work on my communication

The drills

Intent and preparation

Audience read

Shape the communication around the person receiving it.

The gapYou communicate from your own perspective, without accounting for what the listener knows, needs or fears.

Intent · Knowledge gap · 10 minutes · on your own

When to use it

Before anything that has to land with one particular person.

The steps

  1. Pick a real situation and name the listener.
  2. Write what they already know, and what they may not.
  3. Write what they care about, what might concern them, and what they might resist.
  4. Write what they need from you.
  5. Predict their most likely question.
  6. Predict their most likely objection.
  7. Decide what has to change in your communication because of this audience.
  8. Deliver it.
  9. Compare what you predicted against what actually happened.

You know it worked when

The communication changes because of the audience, rather than being the same message pointed at somebody new.

What else it works, and why

Message
Knowing the audience changes the information, examples and level of detail.
Connection
Noticing their needs and response rather than working from your own frame.

If it did not work

If their response differs from your prediction, update your model of them rather than concluding they were wrong.

Which drill is yours, in what order and at what dose, is not something a page can tell you. That is what a Discovery Call is for.
