Intent and preparation
Context read
Account for the situation around the communication, not only the person in it.
The gapYou use an appropriate behaviour in the wrong context.
When to use it
Before anything where the room, the stakes or the power dynamic is unfamiliar.
The steps
- Pick one upcoming communication.
- Name the relationship, the environment, the time available and the stakes.
- Name the emotional climate, the number of people, the formality and the power dynamics.
- Ask: what would work in this context?
- Ask: what might fail in this context?
- Choose the approach.
- Do it.
- Note what the context demanded that you did not anticipate, and record the adjustment.
You know it worked when
Your communication changes with the context rather than with your preference.
What else it works, and why
- Message
- Context decides what is relevant and how it should be structured.
- Delivery
- Formality, urgency and size change the vocal and expressive choices.
- Presence
- Different contexts demand different composure, authority and energy.
- Connection
- Relationship and power affect how it will be received.
Which drill is yours, in what order and at what dose, is not something a page can tell you. That is what a Discovery Call is for.
