Interaction and connection
Empathy expression
Show that you understood, rather than understanding privately and replying with advice.
The gapYou grasp what somebody is going through and respond only with logic, advice or your own experience.
When to use it
Any conversation where somebody has brought you something difficult.
What you need
A partner with a real difficult situation to describe.
The steps
- Partner describes a difficult situation.
- Listen without solving it.
- Identify what happened, what they may be experiencing, and what appears to matter to them.
- Respond first with acknowledgement.
- Use language that reflects rather than assesses: it sounds like, I can see why, that seems to have been.
- Do not give advice yet.
- Ask one question to understand further.
- Move towards a solution only if it is wanted.
You know it worked when
They can tell that their experience was understood.
What else it works, and why
- Intent
- You deliberately communicate recognition before pursuing your own aim.
- Message
- Empathy has to be expressed in accurate language.
- Delivery
- Tone decides whether acknowledgement lands as genuine or mechanical.
What usually goes wrong
Confusing empathy with agreement.
If it did not work
If it sounds artificial, drop the phrases and reflect back what they actually said.
Which drill is yours, in what order and at what dose, is not something a page can tell you. That is what a Discovery Call is for.
