When to use it
With somebody unfamiliar, or where the rapport has gone thin.
The steps
- Choose the conversation.
- Identify one genuine point of human connection.
- Begin with an appropriate acknowledgement.
- Show interest with a relevant question.
- Listen to the answer.
- Build on what they actually said.
- Do not force familiarity or over disclose.
- Continue, keeping your attention on them.
- Review: did I create ease, or perform friendliness?
