Interaction and connection
Reading the room
Notice what the room is doing while you are still talking.
The gapDelivering the prepared thing regardless of what is happening in front of you.
When to use it
Anything delivered to more than three people.
What you need
A group, and stopping points decided in advance.
The steps
- Deliver a short message to a group.
- At the points you chose, stop and scan attention, faces, posture, questions, silence and energy.
- Identify what the room appears to be telling you.
- Decide whether to continue, clarify, slow down, ask a question, change the example, or address the resistance.
- Make one adjustment.
- Observe what happens.
- Repeat.
You know it worked when
You notice the change and respond, rather than finishing the plan.
What else it works, and why
- Intent
- You may need to change how you pursue the objective.
- Message
- Confusion or resistance may require changing what is being said.
- Delivery
- Pace, energy, volume and emphasis may have to change.
- Presence
- You stay grounded while monitoring the room.
If it did not work
If you misread it, compare your interpretation with what the audience actually experienced.
Which drill is yours, in what order and at what dose, is not something a page can tell you. That is what a Discovery Call is for.
