Work on my communication

The frameworks

Storytelling

Experience, insight, application

Convert something that happened to you into something another person can use.

Message · Capability framework · No. 28

The problem it addresses

Stories that are interesting and leave the audience with nothing to do.

The shape

  1. Experience
  2. Insight
  3. Application

Why that order

Experience gives credibility and context, insight extracts the meaning, and application makes that meaning transferable to somebody whose situation is not yours.

A worked example

Experience
I once spent three days preparing a presentation that technically covered everything.
Insight
I had optimised for completeness rather than for what the audience needed.
Application
Now I identify the decision the audience has to make and build around that.

What usually goes wrong

Ending with a generic lesson that the experience did not produce.

Adapting it

Coaching
Experience, insight, then the learner's own application.
Public speaking
Story, insight, audience takeaway.

Mostly serves Message, and reaches into Connection and Intent.

A framework tells you what shape the answer takes. It cannot tell you whether shape is what you are short of, and for most people it is not. Which one is yours, and whether a framework is the right instrument at all, is what a Discovery Call is for.
