Story spine
Tell a story that carries a point rather than a story that is enjoyable.
The gapDetail without progression, and no reason the story was told.
When to use it
Whenever an example would do more than an argument.
The steps
- Choose a real experience.
- Identify the central point.
- Identify the situation, the challenge, the action, the result and the meaning.
- Remove the irrelevant detail.
- Tell it in sixty seconds.
- Tell it again in thirty.
- End by connecting it to the objective.
You know it worked when
The story has a point and the listener knows why they heard it.
What else it works, and why
- Intent
- The story serves a purpose rather than entertaining.
- Delivery
- Meaning depends heavily on pacing, emphasis and variation.
- Connection
- Storytelling works through their engagement.
In the daily practice
An ordinary day supplies endless material for practising structure.
Which drill is yours, in what order and at what dose, is not something a page can tell you. That is what a Discovery Call is for.
