The shape

  1. Bottom line
  2. Context
  3. Evidence
  4. Implication
  5. Decision or action

Why that order

Senior stakeholders do not need all the information reproduced. They need five answers: what is happening, why it matters, what the evidence shows, what it means, and what you need from them.

A worked example

Bottom line
We can complete the migration this quarter.
Context
70 per cent of systems are already migrated.
Evidence
The remaining systems have no critical dependencies.
Implication
The major remaining risk is resource availability.
Action
We need approval for two additional engineers for the final six weeks.

You have it right when

The executive can answer four questions: what is happening, why does it matter, what do you recommend, and what do you need from me.

Mostly serves Message, and reaches into Intent and Presence.

A framework tells you what shape the answer takes. It cannot tell you whether shape is what you are short of, and for most people it is not. Which one is yours, and whether a framework is the right instrument at all, is what a Discovery Call is for.
